T-shirt Upcycle #8- Omaha T's

Here is our final t-shirt post. For this project we did not use Kendra’s botched t’s but were inspired by her beautiful screen printing. If you haven’t visited her easy shop yet this is your chance, click here.
(Just to be clear, we did not do screen printing for our Omaha T’s but rather used stencil and fabric paint like we have done in the past.)

Presenting our Omaha T’s

We love Omaha and hope that there are many others out there who want to show off their love for The Big O.

These and all of our T shirt up-cycle projects will be at our booth at the Omaha Farmer’s Market, this Saturday June 11th.

June Farmer's Market and Sadie's Snack Bag

We are getting ready for the Omaha Farmer’s Market on June 11th in the Old Market. This week our blog will feature some of  the new products we have been making in our citymade sweatshop and a few of our favorite citymade products.

We wanted to start with a very special new product. We were inspired by friends-of-city-made, Luisa and Mark, and their dog Sadie.

Isn’t she adorable?

The whole family came to our booth at the last Farmer’s market. Luisa said she  was looking for something to put Sadie’s treats in during walks. At the time she bought a cute little wristlet of ours, but it started Melany and I thinking about making a snack bag for dogs.

So, here it is: Sadie’s Snack Bag.

The bags are made from up-cycled pants (cargo or denim). The inside is lined with rip stop (think sandwich wraps/snack bags) which can be easily washed. (We personalized Sadie’s by using a stencil and fabric paint. Want it personalized? Send us an email.)

There is also a strap with a hook to easily carry the bag or hook it on a leash.

Sadie loves all the different styles we have and so will you.

So come by the citymade booth on Saturday June 11th and check out these cute bags and so much more!

(Very, very BIG Thank You to Sadie’s mommy and daddy, Luisa and Mark!)

T shirt up-cycle, part 7

We are getting near the end of our T shirt up-cycling challenge with .

Since what we were left with was a lot of T shirt pieces, we thought we would piece together this circle scarf.

It was simple to make (if you consider cutting 40 circles, sewing them together, turning them, top stitching them, then connecting them simple).

But really. It was a project Melany knocked off in between one of Caroline’s power naps.

And even Caroline approves.

Botched T, part 6: Snack attack!

Here at citymade, one of our favorite things to make are our re-usable snack bags. It only seemed natural, then, to up-cycle a couple of Kendra’s botched onesies into snack bags. These are perfect for on-the-go.

By the way-we would love to know the story behind the Texas design. . .

Botched T, part 5: Baskets of fun!

There were a couple of T shirts that had prints on it that we were not really able to tell what they were. It probably wouldn’t have worked to make a bag, or a purse out of them. So. instead, we decided to cut them up and quilt them into this pink and gray basket.

Now the botch looks like a random design.

We are using it to store some of our favorite books.

Botched T, part 4: Hoo-Ray!

We LOVE this pigeon! It was too cute a design to not show. But, since it didn’t work for Kendra on a T shirt, we thought it would work on a tote bag.

We added some flowery handles for extra fun.

And Ava is ready to go!

T shirt challenge, part 3: Sun T

Carol here. So, lately I have been really into this T shirt up-cycling thing. Maybe it is the availability of T shirts. I mean doesn’t everyone have a bunch of “Kiss Me,  I’m Irish” T shirts or T shirts from a previous job? Anyway, I hate to waste anything, so I began looking at T shirts differently. Not as something to throw away, but as a possibility.

That’s why the arrival of  Kendra’s botched T’s was timed perfectly.

Here is our 3rd attempt at up-cycling one of her botched T’s.

Sun T with rosets.

Another “I Love Bunnies” T. First, we cut the T and sewed a strip of T shirt scrap around the top in order to make it a tank top. Then we took some scraps from other T shirts, (Yes-we have a bag of T shirt scraps, need any?), and bunched them into rosets and hand sewed them onto the T.

And of course, gotta love the bunnies!

T shirt challenge, part 2 Ruffles!

One of our favorite sayings here at citymade is “when in doubt, put a ruffle on it!” (and sometimes a bird, wink, wink.)

Well, we did just that with another of Kendra’s botched T’s.

We took another T shirt and cut strips from it. Ruffled them on the serger and sewed them onto the shirt, covering up the botched bit. And while we were ruffling, we cut off the sleeves and replaced them with ruffles.

We wanted to keep the “i love bunnies” bit because it makes us smile.

T-shirt challenge/Bunny botched T to purse

A few weeks ago we received a package from good friend of citymade, Kendra Shedenhelm. You may remember her from Mary’s baby gift post. She sent us a botched T to up-cycle.

Well, the package she sent us was full of “botched” T’s. We are floored by the gift and so we have issued ourselves a new challenge. We want to up-cycle each and every one of the T’s and onesies.

First we want to give a brief intro to Kendra and Big Bridge Studios in case you don’t know who she is and what she is about:

With a two year old as her motivation, Kendra Shedenhelm created Big Bridge Studios.

The designs of Big Bridge Studios are inspired by Brooklyn, the amazing Verrazano Bridge, and her toddler’s trucks, trains and tractors. Kendra began hand-printing these inspirations on her infant’s clothes when he was born, taking photo shoots of his favorite toys and turning them into wearable designs. “The bus in “Beep Beep Bus” was the first toy that went with us everywhere, and it delighted us all to see this design on his clothing.”
As Kendra’s son grows, so does her interest in positive imagery. In “Galloping Horses,” the horses are running together, in a pack, but each horse has its own design, and its own individuality. “Tractor Helping Tractor” and “Train Helping Train,” are reminders to not only work together, but, small or big, help one another. Originally designed as a mural for a grammar school in Manhattan, “Happy Bird” uses the symbols of a sunrise and a singing bird to emulate hope and happiness. “I have the great benefit of an ever-changing and evolving muse, and I look forward to how my subject matter changes with him.”
Big Bridge designs are initially hand-printed by Kendra, using either a silkscreen or lithographic process. Upon production, they are digitally printed in the home of a fellow mom, using waterbased and eco-friendly inks. The results are bright, crisp, and completely washable. All designs are available in any size, from newborn to adult.
Thanks Kendra!
And now for our first creation.
Bunny botched T to handy purse.
We wanted to preserve Kendra’s cute bunny design so we made it the front of the purse.
We used the rest of the shirt to be the lining and pockets.
Botched? I don’t think so. Cute and handy? Definitely!

Farmer's Market, Yeah!

Citymade the First Downtown Farmer's Market

We had so much fun at the first downtown Farmer’s Market. It was a beautiful day and we met so many great people in addition to friends of citymade.

We want to give a big special thanks to sister-of-citymade, Catherine, for all her help getting us organized. Thank you and we love you!

We hope to be back at the Farmer’s Market in June. In the meantime check out our products page and our Etsy store. Don’t see what your looking for? Send us an email.
