The Girl with the Yellow Hat

Carol here. Posting from Chicago where we are enjoying biking by the lake, walking a bunch throughout the city, great company (sister, brother-in-law, nephew and niece) and really great weather. Don’t be jealous. Well. O.K. Be a little jealous. We also took in a Decemberists concert.

Recently friend-of-citymade, Michele P., handed me an article from MSLiving about  big floppy sun hats. I have always wanted to make a sun hat from embroidered baseball hats from Customized Wear. Ask Melany. I have tried to no avail. But, this time, I think it turned out pretty cute.

Not nearly as cute as our model, Lauren.

I used a bright yellow skirt with a patterned outside. The lining of the skirt is the lining of the hat. I  have enough material for another hat with the leftover skirt. Hmmm, Farmer’s Market perhaps?

The pattern and execution were fairly simple, however, I think I may play around with it. Come up with some different looks. Just as soon as we get home.

Anna's Tote

Anna recently turned six years old and had been diligently asking for a tote bag for her birthday.  I decided to use a dress that was one of her favorites that she recently grew out of.

Anna loved this little dress and was heartbroken when she couldn’t wear it anymore.  Normally, she would just pass down her clothes to her two younger sisters but she had a hard time letting this one go.  I love the colors in this dress and thought it would make a lovely tote bag.

Here is Anna with her birthday tote bag

Anna has always been camera shy but she really loves her tote and takes it everywhere with her.  I have to admit I like looking through her purse or bag to see what she deems important enough to tote along.  Right now the contents of her tote are as follows: an empty wallet, sunglasses, a comb, an old cel phone, a notebook, lip gloss, a camera, three sets of old keys, and a bracelet.  She seems pretty prepared for a six year old.

Working with Big Bridge Studio

If you follow our blog faithfully (and we hope you do), you may remember that we were up-cycling with Big Bridge Studio, run by good friend-of-citymade, Kendra. She recently blogged about our blog and you can read that here.

We will once again be at the Omaha Farmer’s Market tomorrow July 9, 8:00 to 12:30 . Be sure to stop by and say hi!

Life Lessons. . .

Whew. That was an interesting Farmer’s Market. I am not sure what was worse, the wind or the rain?

However, we did learn a few things from the experience.

What I learned from standing in a windy, rainy storm trying to stay dry and keep all the fabric dry. (I added pictures for the fun of it. And, unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of our pathetic faces in the nasty weather)

by Carol:

1. Vendors at the Omaha Farmer’s Market are really nice people. The neighbors on both sides of our tent at different times helped us out. Especially the woman and her son selling produce. She tied up our tent to hers with weights ( to prevent it form blowing away), and helped us secure our tarp. She also held Caroline:)

2. (This is a tough one to admit) Sometimes your husband gives good advice. Christian recommended bringing a tarp with us. And I wasn’t going to, but he put it in the car and we totally used it as a wall to keep us and our products dry.

Thanks, honey.

3. The sun does come out again. O.k. I know that sounds “cheesey”, but after a couple of hours (yes, hours) the sun did come out and it ended up being a nice day. And, people made their way to the market and to our booth (which ended up looking really nice thanks to Melany).

by Melany:

1. Everything is better with a friend.  I couldn’t imagine trying to set up a booth and man it on my own…all during a rain storm.  Two is always much nicer than one! (Carol: True that!)

2.   We are pretty protective of our products.  Our booth looked pretty pathetic and skimpy for the first two hours because we were scared our stuff would get ruined.  We put a lot of heart and soul into what we do and did not want to see anything get ruined.

3. Babies can sleep through ANYTHING.  While Carol and I were literally holding our tent down through the giant wind gusts, Caroline was sound asleep in the wrap sling.  Lucky baby.

4. It is worth it to persevere.  By 9:00a.m. we were worn out and ready to quit for the day.  We were so close  to packing up and shutting down but, for some reason, we kept waiting.  Like Carol said earlier, the sun eventually came out and people started coming to our booth and made purchases.  Because we stayed, we got to meet some great people, sell some products, take some orders and stay in good report with the Omaha Farmer’s Market.

Well, those are the lessons we have learned. Hopefully, the next time we are at the Farmer’s Market it will be the perfect day. . .

Caroline in Headbands

What could be better than citymade being at another Omaha Farmer’s Market? (That’s right, this Saturday, June 25th 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) How about a cute baby in headbands?

Here she is. Beautiful Caroline in some of our up-cycled T-shirt headbands.

We had a request for headbands at our last farmer’s market.  We like a good challenge so we decided to try to make headbands out of up-cycled t-shirts.

We have two different kinds of flowers on our headbands: felt flowers

and fabric flowers.

Stop by our booth this Saturday to check them out. Caroline will be there!

Farmer's Market, new page, bubble gum and cherry cobbler!

Whew! What a great (and busy) weekend here at city made. We were at the Farmer’s Market  on Saturday.

We had a great time and met some wonderful people. Many times, at the market, people ask us if we can make something specific for them. Melany and I are willing to try almost anything,(sewing-wise that is), we just need time to do it and a way of getting in touch with those who want it. Thanks to our tech guy (Christian), we set up a Product Request Page on our site. Just click on it, fill out the easy form and we will be in touch. So exciting, as many of our ideas come from the great people we meet.

Also this weekend:

Colin won the Bubble gum contest at Springfield days! ( A second win for Colin)

(Still unclear: is it the size of the bubble or the amount of bubbles?)

Christian took the kids cherry picking at a friends house.

The result was the most delicious cherry cobbler! (Thank you Teri Lynn Schrag for letting us pick cherries and Christian for making the cobbler!)

On with the sewing and creating.

Friends in Aprons

One of the first things we (Melany and Carol that is) made together was an apron, oven mitt, pot holder set. It was for a friend’s bridal shower and it was also the thing that started our working together.

Since that time we have made lots of aprons in all different shapes and  styles. We want to highlight a few that we will have for sale at our booth at the Farmer’s Market and we thought what better way then to have some of our friends model them.

Michelle and Hannah are wearing our full length reversible apron.

One side has colorful stripes and an aplique,

while the other  has fruit and birds (put a bird on it).

Next, we have our friend Lynne in linen.

This apron was part of the ikea linen fabric find. We added  the stencil for a little something extra.

Luisa (Sadie’s mommy) is wearing another half apron.

This was made from some bought fabric with some fabric from an unused curtain for the reverse side.

Melany’s neighbor, Lisa, stopped by and posed in one of our clothespin aprons.

The large pocket can hold many clothespins or any thing else you need.

Wow! We have some lovely friends!

But, wait, we had a few fellas who also admired our aprons.

Dan looking pretty in pink

and Mark sporting a nice summer look. (The T shirt actually matches the apron. Nice.)

Way to go guys!

See you tomorrow at the Farmer’s Market June 11th 8:00 to 12:30.

Get your Bag Ready for the Farmer's Market!

One thing we really like to see at the Farmer’s Market is when people bring their own, re-usable bags to use for holding all the good things they find. And, if you don’t have a bag you can reuse, don’t worry, you can stop by our booth and pick one up.

One style of bag we will have for sale at the Farmer’s Market:

The Pouch with a Secret. (note: we have featured these bags before on our blog before. Check out that post here.)

The large tote folds easily up into the pouch so you can throw it in the car or in your purse.

Ava will demonstrate how to unfold the bag.

Very nice. Thank you, Ava.

Here is one of our new styles. We like to call it the Omaha bag.

The big bag folds up into a pouch with the state of Nebraska on it.

We have  more bags of all shapes and sizes and we will have them at our booth on June 11 at the Farmer’s Market.
