The Christmas Quilt

Carol and I admit we have a fascination with quilters.  A handmade quilt is a thing of true beauty and dedication. In the past, we have made a small doll quilt from scraps and a rag quilt from baby clothes but this Christmas we made an attempt at a “real” quilt.  We designed a quilt block  and constructed a wall hanging quilt from these blocks for my Grandpa and Grandma.

This quilt had a very personal touch because each grandchild and great grandchild designed the center of a block using fabric markers.  We then framed each block using a postage stamp design, then sewed the blocks together.

This quilt was a learning experience for sure.  The biggest lesson we learned was not to scrimp on batting.  A high quality cotton or bamboo batting is definitely worth the extra cost.  If you  are going to go through all of the hard work of quilting it just makes sense to use quality batting.  Needless to say, Grandpa and Grandma loved their Christmas quilt  and were very emotional as they read each block.

More from handmade Christmas: Sophie's house

Carol here. I have made several of these little doll houses. They’re a bit time consuming, but each time I think I improve ( I hope) and  the result is always satisfying.

This one was made for citymade niece, Sophie.

I really paid attention to details this time around like the decorative buttons and the ribbon.

I also tried my hand at making pipe cleaner people.

They didn’t turn out too bad. And don’t they look cozy in their house.

Check out their front yard.

We hope Sophie likes her fabric house as much as we love her!

Christmas gifts part II: the up-cycled jackets

Still more from our Christmas 2011 handmade gift stash. These gifts are some of our favorite kind.

They were up-cycled clothing turned messenger bag.

The light brown used to be a jacket of city made hubby Christian and the pants were a combo of an old pair of James’ and an old pair of Carol’s.

The interior of both bags was an old bed sheet.  We were able to use pockets from both items which saved some work and added an extra handy pocket on the inside of each bag.

We scavenged the straps and clips from old belts and purses.

It felt good to be re-purposing again. What do you think? Another 365 days? Hmmm. . . maybe 2013? or 14?

Happy 2012!

We’re back. We took a few weeks off to enjoy the Holidays with family and friends. Now we are back and looking forward to a productive city made year!

We were busy right up until Christmas and once again, we tried to give the gift of handmade and local, when possible. In the next few posts we want to share some of these handmade gifts.

We’ll start with gifts for city made sisters Catherine and Amber (technically Catherine’s was a birthday gift).

Fabric baskets!

Fun and functional. Two of our favorite words. These baskets are fun to make and very satisfying. They are designed to nest in each other when not being used to store anything from books to lotions to office supplies.

We splurged on the fabric, but the sisters are worth it!

We hope they enjoy their baskets as much as we enjoyed making them.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

This past weekend we made the trek to Santa’s Woods to get our Christmas tree. The Burks are going to Chicago this year but they came along for the fun! It was a cold and snowy day which made it perfect tree getting weather.

Warming up with some hot chocolate.

This year I decided to make a felt garland for our tree. It was super simple and looks really cute.

First, I cut out circles or varying sizes and colors (about 120 of them!)

Next, I sewed the circles together with one continuous line.  This actually went pretty fast.

Here is what the garland looks like on our Christmas tree.

Advent Calendars

Today marks the beginning of the Christmas countdown. Only 25 days until Christmas! The anticipation of Christmas is so fun and children are always wondering, “How many days until Christmas?”

Today we would like to take some time to show you several advent calendars that we have made for our families.

The Quilt

Carol made this quilt advent calendar a couple of years ago. She sewed quilt blocks together using some cute Christmas fabric and denim.  Her pockets are made from felt shapes that she sewed on and individually numbered.  Her children look forward to the surprise in the pocket each morning.

The Tree

This calendar is nice for small children because it is interactive.

The child puts one ornament in the tree each day and by Christmas the tree is full. The tree and ornaments are made of felt so it works like a flannel graph.

We let the kids help design the ornaments which was a lot of fun. The star on the top can be the final one on Christmas day.

The Pocket

I made this pocket calendar new this year for my girls. There are 25 pockets with numbered clothespins. Each day the children can take off the clothespin and put it in the pocket.

Here are some fun ideas of what to fill an advent calendar with:
candy, gum, peppermints, coins, art supplies, stickers, notes of encouragement, kid coupons (such as “Get out of making your bed today” or “Ten extra minutes of video games”), family activities to do each day (drive around and look at Christmas lights, read a Christmas story, bake cookies together), or random acts of kindness challenges (hold the door for someone, make a friendly phone call, compliment someone today)

Happy Christmas countdown!

Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our faithful readers. We hope you are all enjoying this time with your friends and families.

This year has been one of joys and one of sorrows. We have celebrated the gift of a new life and mourned the loss of a dear loved one. We have experienced the wonder of birth and the sting of death and yet, we are aware and grateful of our many blessings.

Melany: I am thankful for my loving life partner, Jeff, who has the biggest heart of anyone I know.
My three precious little girls who fill my heart and arms with love.
I am thankful that my whole family lives close and we can be involved in each others lives.
Our intimate church family who never gives up on one another.
And the best friend anyone could ever ask for who “gets me” when no one else does and continually inspires and encourages my creative spirit.

Carol:
I am thankful for my sweet husband, Christian. He is my best friend and soul mate. Also, my three beautiful children; James, Colin and Ava. They have taught me an enormous amount about love and life.

I am thankful for my family. We have had a rough year, but we learned much about each other, faith and strength.

I am so thankful for the Spiehs family. They are the best friends and kindest people. I am so blessed to have their friendship. And, of course, I am so thankful, grateful, lucky to have a best friend like Melany. I could never have imagined that I would have such an amazingly loyal and true friend.

Citymade is thankful for all of you who read our blog and encourage us with kind words and fresh new ideas.

What are you thankful for this year?

Caroline's Christmas Doll

Two years ago Carol and I decided that we would team up and help each other sew Christmas gifts for our friends and families. Little did we know what that Christmas sewing would lead to. Sewing together seemed to light a creative spark in us that had been dim for some time.

Here we are, in 2011, finally getting to start our Christmas sewing again. I think that I speak for both Carol and I when I say that this is one of citymade’s favorite times of the year.

Most of our Christmas projects will have to wait until after Christmas to be shown on our blog but, since Caroline is not an avid citymade blog reader yet, we have decided to post one of her gifts.

Caroline’s Christmas doll

This doll was one of those projects that flowed so nicely and came together beautifully, if only we could say that about every project.

Caroline has already taken a liking to baby dolls and will “attack” anytime one of her big sisters is playing with one. I decided that it was time for her to have her own dolly to play with. This doll happens to be extra special because it is made from Caroline’s baby clothes that she has already outgrown. Do I even need to say that, “It happens all too fast.”

This is not citymade’s first baby clothes project (baby clothes quilt) and probably not our last.

This is a project that I am excited about doing again and tweaking a little bit. As artists we are always trying to learn and improve…that is half the fun!

It is so neat to look back two years and see where we began and see how far we have come. We are also excited to see where we will be in two more years, the possibilities are endless.

Live Sewing

Yes, you read that correctly. Citymade will be loading up the Bernina for our Craft show this weekend.

(Melany in action!)

We are really excited about this new element. There were many moments at the Farmer’s market and last craft show when we wished we had our sewing machine along.

There are several reasons why we are going to try this out.

First of all, we are hoping it will be a draw to our booth. People love action and may be drawn to our booth to watch the creating in process.

Next, we often have requests for minor alterations on our products. People may ask for a change in a strap, fastener or size of one of our products. Normally, we would have to take down all of their info and get back to them at a later time. With our sewing machine there, our hope is that we can fulfill these requests on the spot.

Lastly, we just love to sew! We always have projects we want to try so, if there is a lull, we can just sew.

This live sewing will be taking place this Friday, November 11th from 5 to 9 pm and Saturday, November 12th from 8am to 1pm at St. Matthews Church 12210 S. 36 St. Bellevue. This is just 0.9 miles SOUTH of HWY 370 On 36th St.

We would love for you to stop by and say hi.

Choose Community…buy local and handmade

What is the big deal with buying local and handmade?

Well…where do we start?

The differences between locally produced goods and mass-produced goods are immeasurable.

Take produce, for instance.  Buying produce at a large chain store is a very different experience from buying produce at a local farmer’s market.

At a large grocery store, the customer is disconnected from where the produce originated and how it was grown.

Often the produce has traveled across the country and has been passed through numerous hands to get to the stands.  The customer needs to become an expert in produce sticker reading to learn anything about the produce he or she is buying, and even that is very minimal.  This takes extra time and effort for the already taxing job of grocery shopping.

In contrast, when buying produce from a farmer’s market, the customer gets to talk and interact with the farmers themselves.  The customer knows exactly where and how the produce was grown, as well as when it was grown and harvested. We love shopping at our local farmer’s market and feel that there is something comforting about a little dirt or an occasional worm on our produce.

There is a similar experience when buying a handmade product.  We enjoy buying items from local artists because they are original, inspired and artistic.  It is nice to see where our money is actually going and who created the product.

Buying local has ecological benefits as well. Transporting goods takes gas and oil, packaging goods is wasteful and large stores and factories pollute the air we breathe.

Buying local is really all about connections.  In our culture today we can easily choose to isolate ourselves from making face to face connections with people.  Technology can be used as a main source of communication if one chooses to do so.

Citymade challenges you to buy local and handmade this holiday season.  Giving a handmade gift to someone says, “You are unique and special and deserve better than the mass-produced, highly marketed, trendy gift of the season.”

Here are several wonderful opportunities to purchase local and/or handmade goods:

1) The Hot Shops Art Center has a winter open house December 3rd and 4th.  This is such a fun experience as the artists open their studio and display what they are making.  There are amazingly talented potters, glass blowers, jewelry makers, seamsters and more.

2) Area Craft Shows- keep an eye out for signs, they are all over the city

Citymade will be at another craft fair on November 10th and 11th at St. Matthews church in Bellevue

3) If you like to shop online check out Etsy-a place to buy and sell handmade.  You can find just about ANYTHING on Etsy.

Visit citymade’s growing Etsy shop here.

Let’s support our artistic community this holiday season and choose local and handmade.
