Broken Basket Re-Used

A tisket, a tasket, we re-purposed a broken basket.

We had a broken basket. Rather than toss it in the trash, we decided to make it usable again.

We cut off the broken handles, and covered it with cute patchwork fabric. Now it is the perfect spot to store any small items.

Race Car Gift Box

Race Car Gift Box

Today we repurposed a shoe box into a gift box for Jace’s birthday present.  How?

1. Paint the shoe box and the lid

2. Make the wheels: We used peanut butter lids, painted them black and added silver poster board circles for the rims

3. Hot glue the windshield (plastic toy packaging) onto the lid

4. Cut out four half circles on the lid for the wheels to fit in and hot glue the wheels onto the sides of the box

5. Use paint, poster board, and sharpies to add detail to the car and rims.

This was a nice alternative to wrapping paper or gift bags and can be repurposed as a storage container to hold toys.

Take-Along Car Track

Take-along Car Track

Today’s post was designed for a special little boy who is turning two next week.  The base for this car-roll is a pillow case and the pockets are made from a plastic vinyl that came from packaging.  The track and decoys are all made from felt scraps we had left over from various projects.  We hope Jace enjoys his new, but re-purposed, take-along car track.  Happy Birthday buddy!

Bingo

Bingo

This week I, Melany, went to a mother-daughter tea at which there was a rousing game of Bingo.  The Bingo chips were made out of colorful and sparkly card-stock. After the game, my mother, a frequent reader of our blog, gathered up the chips from the table (which were being thrown away) and said, “I know that you will find something to do with these.”  Well, here it is mom:  A lampshade.

I happened to have a lamp without a lampshade so I decided to give it a re-purposed shade.  Using fishing line, wire, the Bingo chips and some hot glue I was able to finagle a lampshade.  Mission accomplished.

No Slip Mat

Today’s project: The No Slip Mat.

I (Carol) did some spring cleaning and found this old place mat from when my boys were little. I liked the no slip bottom and thought it would work well placed under the City Made serger, which tends to move and slide around when in use.

We just covered the front with sticky backed felt. And now we can serge away and our machine won’t go away.

Tin plus magnet equals container

One of the things we love about doing this re-purposing post is when people hand us things and ask us to make it into something else.

Today’s post was one of those items. Melany’s MIL gave her this retro looking tin. We, of course, are always in need of containers to store small objects, but thought we would try something different this time. We glued two magnets on the back, hung it on the fridge and now it is a handy container for pens and pencils.

Tea Cup to Candle

This idea comes from a City Made sister, Amber.  Amber took a mis-matched tea cup and turned it into a candle for her mom for mother’s day.  She melted wax in a jar (on a hot plate) and poured it into the cup.  Next, she put the wick in the center of the melted wax and propped it up with a butter knife until the wax hardened.  Nice re-purposing Amber!

Peanut Butter Lid

Peanut Butter Lid Becomes Cupboard Saver

Don’t throw away that peanut butter lid.  Slip it under a messy food container (such as honey) and use it as a coaster to protect your cupboard.  Enough said.

Empty Salad Dressing Bottle for Pouring

Happy Mother’s Day! What better way to celebrate than a pancake breakfast made by your husband! And to make pancake prep easier, we used an empty salad dressing bottle.

We washed out the bottle, popped the top off, and filled it with pancake batter. Now, pouring is easier!

Thank you, Christian, for a delicious Mother’s Day breakfast!
