Corn Husks to Trivet

It’s Nature Week at City Made. We want to celebrate nature by looking at it in a different way. Some of our projects are decorative and some are functional. Enjoy.

Our first project: Corn Husk Trivet.

It’s that time of year where corn becomes a staple at picnics and barbecues. Ever wonder what to do with all those husks? We made a trivet. We dried the husks, then soaked and braided them. Then we sewed them together in a circular pattern. Our trivet is the perfect size for setting small pots on.

Jeans to Summer Shorts

It’s summer in the city and Anna is ready in her cute jean shorts.

She had an old pair of jeans that were a little too short, but still fit well around her waist. A simple cut and seam and she has a new pair of shorts. ( And Mom saved some cash. Now she can buy more ice cream…right?)

Sarong to Apron

Apron

Today we made a re-purposed apron out of a pillow case and the rest of the fabric from the sarong scarf .  If you like this apron we will be selling it, along with others, at the Benson Summer Arts Festival next Saturday, June 12.

Skirts to Bike Baskets

Skirt to bike basket

Today we made these fun bike baskets out of a couple of old skirts.  We used a velcro handle to secure them onto the bike.  These were so popular with our girls that we had no choice but to make three of them!

Bubble Wrap Re-Use

Here’s an easy one for you. Bubble wrap re-use.

Bubble wrap in the bottom of the fruit or veggie drawer in the fridge creates a cushion so the produce doesn’t get bruised as you toss it in.

Now, the trick to this one is not to pop the bubble wrap before setting it in the refrigerator. Good luck.

Plastic Pouch to Tiny Doll Bag

This little plastic pouch had the cutest pair of pink shoes for Ava when she was a baby. Now, she is 6 and the pink shoes don’t fit anymore. But, the package was so nice, I couldn’t throw it away. I am glad I didn’t. It is the perfect thing for tiny dolls and the teeny tiny accessories those dolls come with.

Someday I am sure it could hold her make up, too (shudder).

Small Plastic Hanger to Jewelry Holder

Ever wonder what to do with small plastic hangers? Like the kind that socks come on? Well one of those plus some plastic from seat protectors ( ripped, old, form the car), can become a handy jewelry holder.

The hanger is convenient for selecting which necklace to wear and it folds up nicely, too

Wash Cloth to Make-Up Bag

Our final wash cloth and towel week project is this handy make-up bag.

It is one wash cloth, cut in two, and sewn together. We lined it with plastic from a lotion gift set and the zipper is from an old sweater that we felted (think felted wool week). Triple re-purpose!

Now you have a place for all your Hello Kitty make-up.

Wash Cloth to Wash Mit

Here is the next project with a wash cloth.

We simply cut the wash cloth in half, folded over one half and added bias tape and a loop for hanging. Now you have a handy wash mit.

Do this in fun colors and it is perfect for little ones.

Wash Cloth to Wash Roll

Towel week continued: the Wash Cloth to Wash Roll.

This is a great way to reuse a wash cloth.

We sewed the bottom up and created pockets. Then we sewed a piece of drawstring on the ends. Now we can fill it with bottles of shampoo, lotion and body wash for guests to use while they visit or to take with on a summer vacation.
