Thanksgiving Turkey Wraps

It is Thanksgiving week!  Is everyone ready to cook their giant birds?

The question citymade is asking this year: How are we going to re-purpose that left-over turkey? For the next several days we will be posting recipes so that you can put that left-over turkey to good use.  Most of our recipes come from a trusted Whole Foods application for the iphone.  Carol and I use this app quite frequently and all of the recipes have been wonderful.  Our first recipe uses more than just the turkey leftovers.

Thanksgiving Turkey Wraps

Ingredients

2 tablespoons leftover cranberry relish
1 white or wheat flour tortilla
2 lettuce leaves
1/4 cup leftover stuffing, warmed
3 ounces shredded leftover turkey meat, warmed
2 tablespoons leftover turkey gravy, warmed

Directions

To prepare, spread cranberry relish on one side of the tortilla. Top with lettuce, stuffing, turkey and gravy. Roll up, then cut in half and serve.

Gourd Votive Holder

The gourd votive holder is the perfect way to finish your Thanksgiving table.  We started with a small gourd that had a semi flat bottom so that it stood up on its own.  We traced the bottom of our votive on the top of the gourd and cut out the circle.  Next we hollowed out the gourd with a spoon.

Place the candle inside the gourd for your finished product.

This is what your finished re-purposed Thanksgiving table will look like.

Thanksgiving Place Cards

Another way to spruce up your Thanksgiving table is with place cards.  We made ours using recycled cardboard snack boxes and a glue gun.  First, we cut out a rectangle and folded it in half for the card.

Next, we cut out circles for the turkey’s body.

The feathers were made by cutting strips of cardboard, folding them in half, and gluing them to the back of the turkey circle.  Last, we glued the turkey with feathers onto the card and wrote on the names.

And there you have it…turkey place cards.

Thanksgiving Napkin Rings

It is almost Thanksgiving  (which means we only have 47 more posts before our year long re-purposing challenge is over), and we, at citymade, are here to help you get ready for the holiday.

We begin with the Thanksgiving table.

We took toilet paper rolls

and decoupaged them with decorative paper.

Now you have lovely napkin rings for your table.

And because each roll makes 3 napkin rings, you only need a few rolls to set a large table.

Important note: Probably not a good idea to brag about the fact that your napkin rings used to hold toilet paper. Just say you bought them at ikea.

Fall Sun-catchers

Here at citymade we try not to overload on the decor because we are all about functionality.  However, during the holidays it is hard to stay away from it completely.  We promise we will try to keep our Thanksgiving decor simple and tasteful.

So, if you were hoping for a tutorial on panty hose pilgrims

or pineapple turkeys

you may be a little disappointed.

And, by the way, pet week is over so you won’t be seeing any of this:

Sorry.

What we do have for you today is a simple idea repurposing a natural wonder of fall.

This idea can be done as simple or elaborate as you choose.  I chose to let Anna and Lauren do most of the work on this one.  We started with a nature walk to find the most colorful leaves.

I set the girls up at the kitchen table with their leaves and some contact paper and they went right to work.

I cut the contact paper into squares but you could experiment with different sizes and shapes.

Simply lay the contact paper sticky-side-up and stick the leaves onto the paper with the pretty-side-up.  As soon as they were satisfied with their sun catchers we stuck them up onto the windows.

We love coming home to our newly decorated porch.

Fabric Scrap Door Cushion

Today we created a door cushion with some fabric scraps from our scrap bin.

We were able to stuff the cushion with used dryer lint and sew in two elastic hair bands to hook it onto the door knob.  This will be helpful for keeping small fingers from getting pinched in doorways.

Alternative to Baby wipes

Baby wipes can be useful for so much more than cleaning babies bottoms.  They come in handy for wiping little hands, noses, faces and spills.  The downside to baby wipes is that they produce quite a bit of waste.  Also, some babies skin is too sensitive for the chemicals in commercial baby wipes.  We took some flannel scraps and surged around the edges to create some re-usable baby wipes.

These worked best when coupled with a natural spray.  I like Baby Wipe Companion from the Homestead Company .  If you are cloth diapering it is just as easy to wash baby wipes right along with the diapers.

Sweater Scrap Hand Warmers

We are so thankful for the beautiful fall weather we are having this year.  However we know the reality of Nebraska winters and the cold that will soon be here.  Taking some wool scraps from sweaters we made these hand warmers.

These bags are filled with rice so that they can be warmed up in the microwave.

No more cold hands.
